Menopausal women in China now stand at 160 million, more than 120 million of whom suffer debilitating climacteric symptoms.
Menopause affects the health of 90% of women. Also known as the change of life, menopause signals the end of a woman's reproductive life. Usually occurring around the age of 50, the decline in the ovarian function often brings with it the physical symptoms of hot flashes and fatigue, as well as depression, anxiety and insomnia. Ten to 15 years after the onset of menopause, menopausal women often suffer osteoporosis and other bone disorders, as well as cardiovascular and lipid metabolism problems.
Chinese women going through menopause experience greater bone and joint pain, memory loss and fatigue than do women in the West. They are also subject to higher incidence of depression, irritability, insomnia, irritability and other psychological symptoms.
To raise public awareness on menopause and its effects on women's health and to make it an aspect of universal health care knowledge, the China International Medical Exchange Foundation, the All-China Women's Federation and Chinese Medical Association jointly launched on October 18 -- World Menopause Day -- the China Menopause Care Website
The first-ever public-interest website on menopause care, its aim is to spread the concept of More self-care, Healthier life.
